Our new web site is up and running. Check it out when you have a moment at www.cawineandcheese.com. Amanda Wray at www.wraycodesign.com, a web designer who lives around the corner, has completely re-invented the site. Many of you know Amanda from her “Living in Monrovia” blog. She’s been a friend of the shop since before we opened. Most of the photos on the site were contributed by Joseph R. Davis, a local artist. You’ll find more of his work at www.beautyunbound.com and you’ll have an opportunity to see his work in the shop starting in mid-November.

Artist Bj Lane has returned and her show, “In the Gardens” is now up on the west wall. This exhibit features Bjlane’s most recent work at the Huntington Library, Museum and Gardens. The brilliantly painted canvases are 30″x 30″ and include several paintings of the sculpture garden, the Library, the Huntington Mansion, the Japanese Garden and the new Chinese Garden. We’ll host an Artists’ reception on October 18.

Wine Class. This past Wednesday evening, we had a special Wine and Cheese Pairing evening with both Larry and Jeff sharing the floor. We do not specifically have a class planned for next week. If you have some ideas for class subjects, and there is enough feedback for something next week, we’ll put it together and follow up with a bulletin describing the class. Things are slow right now for a lot of obvious reasons, so besides a subject, we’ll need enough people to tell us they would like to attend a class next Wednesday.

Check out The Orphan Barrel when you’re in the shop. There are at least 20 wines waiting for you to take them home. These wines are all discounted 10% .

Because business continues to be slow, starting Friday, the whole shop is an “Orphan Barrel.” All wines will be 10% off and mixed cases will be 15% off.

Upcoming Events.

We have scheduled a return engagement with Sue and Steve Mathis of Phantom Rivers Winery. On October 17th they will join us in the shop and be pouring their 2007 Chardonnay, the 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, the 2006 Larner Syrah, the 2006 Larner Mourvedre and 2006 Paso del Sol.

We expect Dave Corey of Core Wines on Thursday evening, October 23. He’ll be in town for Wine Dinner events on the following Friday and Saturday evenings, and he was gracious enough to come down early and spend a weeknight in the shop. We’ll be pouring several of his 2006 wines for the first time that evening. Details to follow.

Interested in the Core Wine Dinners put on by Room Forty? Go to their web site at www.roomforty.com to read about the dinners. There is one in Pasadena is on October 24.

We’ll debut the wines of Thompkin Cellars on the evening of November 8.

The Cheese Corner

I don’t want to belabor the point, but the “Barely Buzzed” is still King of the Hill!! For the third consecutive week, we’ve increased the order in the hope of making through an entire week without running out.

Debuting this week is Langres Chalancey, a soft cow’s milk cheese. This cheese originates from the high plains of Langres, in Champagne. The Langres is a farmhouse washed-rind cheese. The shape is unusual, a cone or cylinder with a hollow in the top. The brightly colored rind is the result of continual washing, orange bacteria grow on the surface as well as some white flora or yeast. The cheeses are placed in humid cellars during the 5 to 6 weeks maturing period and are regularly rubbed with brine. The cheese is notable for its pungent smoky-bacon aroma. When young, the texture is firm and grainy. With age, the rind starts to break down and becomes smooth and creamy.

We also a small amount of Picolo that arrived last week. Picolo, a soft ripened triple cream, is designed to bring out the vivacious feeling of spring by combining rich Jersey milk and crème fraîche; when it’s properly aged, this cheese is nutty and melts in your mouth.

We open at 11:00AM Tuesday – Saturday. Tuesday through Thursday, we close at 8:00PM and Friday and Saturday at 9:00PM. We are open Sunday from noon to 6:00PM. We stop serving wine 30 minutes before closing. Please call 626-358-6500 for more information.
