At about 5:15 Saturday evening, 45 minutes before the winemaker tasting was to begin, Kris Curran walked through the door carrying about 9 liters of barrel samples from the 2006 Rancho La Vina Pinot Noir. She stopped just inside the door and seemed to be trying to comprehend the crowd scene! Sudenly applause broke out and a night to remember was under way! She was soon joined by Bruno D’Alfonso. For the next three hours, they rocked the placewith stories of their individual and joint wine ventures. Besides the wines they have produced for their own labels, they talked about and made available for tasting, their first joint venture, D’Alfonso-Curran 2006 Pinot Noir Rancho La Vina Sta Rita Hills (it’s likely to be bottles in the next 60to 90 days).

The Cheese Corner

Leave it to teIrish to create Cahill’s Whiskey Cheddar. Mike and Marion Cahill of County Limerick have gone beyond their Porter version of this tangy cheddar. It has a light golden tint, and is softer than one might expect from a cheddar, breaking apart almost like a feta. It’s a simple vintage cheddar entwined with Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey to give a fabulous savory tang.

Joe and Mary Matos grew up on the lush volcanic island of San Jorge in the Portuguese Azores. It happens to be an island known for its delicious cheeses. When they relocated to Santa Rosa, CA, in the 1970s, they carried the recipe for their homeland’s native cheese with them. Putting their own personal American spin on the original recipe, St George- named for the island – is a full flavored cow milk cheese with a cheddary depth and rich texture.

Upcoming Events:

As noted above, we will be joined by Winemakers Kris Curran and Bruno D’Alfonso on the evening of February 20, from 6 to 9:00pm (last pour at 8:40) . Many know Kris as the the person who put Sea Smoke wines on the map, but her own Curran Wines repertoire includes several top flight wines. Bruno was the winemaker at Sanford for over 20 years, but is best known now for his Badge and Di Bruno labels. The line-up has been listed at the top of this Newsletter. (Pricing for the flight will be contingent on what wines they wish to pour.)

How about a “Double Header.” On the following evening, Kris and Bruno will be at Noir Food and Wine. There they will be pouring a line-up that will include D’Alfonso-Curran 2006 Pinot Noirs, along with the 2006 Badge Pinot and a several other wines. All of these will be perfectly paired with dinner by Chef Claud Beltran. Go to www.noirfoodandwine.com for additional details.

Super Bowl Sunday is just around the corner. Many football fans will be watching the big game at party’s or favorite bars. CWaC, of course, is the refuge for those who don’t want to watch the game or get caught up in all of the craziness! However, you should know that I am a football fan and will be plugging in 12″ black and white Zenith that my parents gave me for my 20th birthday! (half the guests in our shop were not old enough to watch TV then, so please don’t do the math!) Out of respect for the non-fans, the sound will not be turned on. Come in and enjoy the wine, cheese and from 3:30 to 5:30pm, the light jazz and classical sound of Norman’s guitar.

Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday this year. We have not yet worked out the details, but it seems like it would be a good day for a sparkling wine, cheese and chocolate. We are waiting for that crack squad of PR folks over at Toyota to give us some guidance on how to make you feel good and then we’ll release more details.

Our Wine Classes will resume on February 6 with a session titled “Super Wines for the Super Bowl.” Elizabeth Schweitzer will pair a variety of wines with several of the favorite game watching munchies. Yes, there is an alternative to drinking a beer with your Buffalo Wings! The class will cost $35.00 and start at 3:00pm, lasting about two hours. Seating is limited to 12 persons and reservations are necessary. You can either go to Elizabeth’s site at www.winewisdomandwit.com, where you can click on “C W&C Class” and pay via Paypal or call 626-358-6500 and reserve your space in the class. In that instance, please plan to pay at the class by check or cash directly to Elizabeth.

More information about Wine Classes. We are planning to offer more Wine 101 classes. The next two such classes will be on February 27 and May 15. Additional 101 classes will be in August and November. These classes will cost $35.00. In between these classes, we will schedule a variety of “Subject Specific”classes. Some of these classes may cost more than $35.00 depending on the wines/curriculum. We’ll update you on those classes as they are developed.

Stop by Sunday afternoons when we’re joined by Norman Davis who plays classical and light jazz pieces for a couple hours. His guitar playing provides a relaxing back drop to the whole wine and cheese experience. The music starts at 3:30PM.

Tax Free Wednesdays. On Wednesdays, all retail purchases will be discounted 9.75%. As previously noted, this discount will not compound with others already available.

The Cheese Corner

Echo Mountain Blue is our newest edition to the Cheese Corner. A blend of raw goat and cow’s milk, the flavor is crisp and complex in it’s subtle hint of the goat’s milk. Brilliantly hued veins traverse the body of this cheese, infusing it with a bold, earthy flavor. A unique and subtle balance comes from blending the finest goat and cow’s milk, not to mention a creaminess that continues forever.

Jeff is also introducing Rosso di Langa, a cheese from Northern Italy. It’s a washed bloomy-rind cheese from a blend of sheep and cow’s milk. The paste is supple, almost squishy, with muted washed rind aromas. Not as intense as the garlicky, barnyard smells of a ripe Taleggio, but a mild introduction to that category of cheeses.

Upcoming Events:

Bistro 45 will celebrate it’s 20th Anniversary on Sunday, January 31. They promise prodigious portions of cassoulet, steamed mussels, sliced leg of lamb, Provencale chicken, grilled veggies, calamari and French fries. Likewise, they’ll offer unlimited amounts of four California and French wines. To wrap up the evening, there will be a melange of profiterole pastries. Unlike the wine dinners we tell you about at Bistro 45, this is more of an introduction opportunity if you have not been to the Bistro before. This dinner is offered at $50 pp + tax and tip. Call for reservations at 626-795-2478.

We’re very excited to announce that on the evening of February 20, from 6 to 9:00pm (last pour at 8:40), we will be joined by Winemakers Kris Curran and Bruno D’Alphonso. Many know Kris as the the person who put Sea Smoke wine on the map, but her own Curran Wines repertoire includes several top flight wines. Bruno was the winemaker at Sanford for over 20 years, but is best known now for his Badge and Di Bruno labels. I do not have the line-up yet, but that should be worked out shortly. (Pricing for the flight will be contingent on what wines they wish to pour.)

How about a “Double Header.” On the following evening, Kris and Bruno will be at Noir Food and Wine. There they will be pouring a line-up that will include D’Alphonso-Curran 2006 Pinot Noirs, along with the 2006 Badge Pinot and a few additional wines. All of these will be perfectly paired with dinner by Chef Claud Beltran. Go to www.noirfoodandwine.com for additional details.

Always on the lookout for something new and interesting, Jeff is bringing the latest seasonal cheese from Cowgirl Creamery. It’s called DEVIL’S GULCH. Made from rich Jersey cow’s milk from John Taverna’s dairy, the paste is similar to that of their other seasonal cheeses, St Pat and Pierce pt. The rind is lightly dusted in sweet and spicy dried red pepper flakes grown and oven dried by Janet Brown at her nearby All Star Organics farm.

Based on bottle sales last week, the best selling red was the Bodegas Paso Robles Solea (Tempranillo & Graciano) Central Coast. The best selling white was the Bodegas Paso Robles Dona Blanca (Grenache Blanc and Albarino) Paso Robles.

Our thanks to everyone who came in last Friday evening to meet winemaker Dorothy Schuler and sample her Bodegas Paso Robles wines. It was, sales wise, the best night we’ve had since Phantom Rivers was last here in July. A lot of people obviously enjoyed Dorothy’s take on Spanish and Portuguese style wines as bottles throughout her price range sold more or less equally.

“Chasing Lions” is back in stock. This has to be one of the best “budget conscious” wines we have carried. It’s a blend of 55% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cab Franc, 7% Syrah and 3% Petit Verdot. It’s dense and medium bodied, with flavors of licorice, mocha and black cherry.

The West Wall displays the work of Artist Beth Butterfield. She has a dozen dozen new “paintings.” You may recall that her art consists of cut pieces of paper that close up provide texture and depth, but with a few steps back appear more like an oil or watercolor painting.

Stop by Sunday afternoons when we’re joined by Norman Davis who plays classical and light jazz pieces for a couple hours. His guitar playing provides a relaxing back drop to the whole wine and cheese experience.
Tax Free Wednesdays. On Wednesdays, all retail purchases will be discounted 9.75%. As previously noted, this discount will not compound with others already available.

The Cheese Corner

Bleu des Basques Brebis is an artisan sheeps milk blue cheese made in the Pyrenees mountains, a region of the French Basque country. These verdant hills are full of wildflowers and fresh grass that give the milk it’s complexity, subtlety and lightness. Bleu des Basques has a wonderful combination of earthy spiciness and hints of apricot. Pair this with Sauternes or Port.

Upcoming Events:

Noir Food and Wine in Pasadena is planning a wine dinner with Brian Loring on January 24. Eight to ten different Pinots will be sampled, all with perfectly paired small plates from Chef Claud Beltran. The cost will be $129 (includes tax and gratuity). Make your reservations at www.noirfoodandwine.com

The Cheese Corner

To lose weight (especially some of those pounds added during the holiday season), it’s not always a matter of eating less, but eating better. According to “Men’s Health Magazine,”full fat cheese is an excellent source of cassein protein — one of the best muscle building nutrients you can eat. Danish researchers found that even men ate 10 ounces of full fat cheese a day for three weeks, their LDL (bad) cholesterol didn’t budge.

The same article also noted that in their survey of the “125 best Supermarket Foods,” the Cypress Grove Fresh Chevre was the best all purpose cheese. I could also tell you about the best bacon or oatmeal, but we don’t carry those items. We carry cheese, and a number of Cypress grove cheeses in particular.

Upcoming Events:

Bistro 45 will offer a Wine Dinner on Sunday, January 17 at 6:30pm. The wines paired with the dinner will be five Zinfandels as follows: Trinchero 2006 Napa Cellars, Julie Johnson’s Porque no, Signorello’s 2006 “Luvisi,” Outpost 2007 Howell Mountain from Thomas Brown and Larry Turley’s Napa Moore/Earthquake. Call now for reservations at 626-795-2478 (and remember, those of you who “Fed” holidays, will be off the next day). $85 pre-paid

The West Wall now displays the work of Artist Beth Butterfield. She has returned with a dozen new “paintings.” You may recall that her art consists of cut pieces of paper that close up provide texture and depth, but with a few steps back appear more like an oil or watercolor painting.

ColRouge is a natural rind cheese that is reddish-orange in color with a slight white finish. It starts with pasteurized whole milk, obtained from a local diary. The cheese curd is gently ladled by hand into forms that give the cheese it’s size and shape. During the two week aging period the cheese is turned and “smeared” by hand. Smearing is a process by which each cheese is rubbed to help along the development of the special rind characteristics.

The ColoRouge is then wrapped in a special foil imported from Europe that allows it to “breathe” oxygen, thus allowing it to keep the cheese “alive” and fresh during it’s entire life. The flavor changes as it ages. Soft and creamy with mild buttery overtones give way to complex spiciness. Each cheese is marked with a date code. if you like the cheese a bit more firm, or maybe a bit more soft, or maybe even…WAY SOFT, then you can discern this off your individual cheese by using their inventive date code system.
